Trout Fishing - East Coast, North Island, New Zealand

THE KOPUAWHARA RIVER is a small river which runs out of the Wharerata Ranges, through forestry and down through our farm, before running into the sea at Mahia. There are deep pools with boulder rapids between. The valley is bush clad with grassy clearings on the river edge. We farm 3km of the Kopuawhara River with further access up into forestry. The river is full of rainbow and brown trout with several 3 to 4 pound trout in each pool. There is no public access and it is only fished by our friends and guests. It is very private and provides wonderful fishing. Fly fishing only with a strict catch and release policy.

We can drop you out to the river by landcruiser and collect you if required. It is 9km from our homestead and The Quarters. You may have to walk the last 2km if the track is wet. A guide is available by prior arrangement.

THE RUAKATURI RIVER is one of New Zealand's top fly fishing rivers and is heavily stocked with rainbow and brown trout which can be caught on dry fly or nymph. The Ruakaturi is renowned for its strong fighting rainbow. It is about a 1 hour drive from The Quarters to fish sections of the river. We can arrange a guide if required.


Ruakaturi River

LAKE WAIKAREMOANA is situated in the Te Urewera National Park. This is one of New Zealand's most scenic places. The lake is open year round to fly and lure fishing. The rivers running into the lake are fly fishing only and are closed 1 July to 1 December. Lake Waikaremoana is a 1.5 hour drive from The Quarters. We can arrange an overnight stay and a guide if you wish.
